DT Institute Releases Report: The State of Peace and Development in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique
This week, DT Institute released The State of Peace and Development in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, a summary meta-analysis of available research, analysis, and official reports on Cabo Delgado as of early July 2021.
Decades-long and poorly tended to social-economic frictions came to a head in 2017 as Islamic State’s East Africa Province and associated insurgent groups destabilized Cabo Delgado. Over 700,000 Mozambicans have been displaced as authorities attempt to contain the growing insurgency. Insurgents’ motivations, origins, and intent remain a topic of debate among analysts.
As northern Mozambique’s security deteriorates, internally displaced people struggle to access basic resources like clean water, food, and medical care. This humanitarian crisis threatens thousands of lives and is likely to interrupt essential peace and development activities in Cabo Delgado.
The confluence of dangerous factors in Cabo Delgado—including violent extremism, endemic poverty, transnational organized crime, human rights abuses, and gender-based violence—demands immediate and collaborative action from the international community. DT Institute is doing its part by offering this meta-analysis of timely and relevant information on the push and pull factors, peace and development programming, and the ongoing crisis response in the province.
